Mike Toomey Lobbyist News: Might Community Colleges Offer Bachelor Degrees?
Senator Kel Siliger, Republican from Amarillo, has introduced legislation that would authorize community colleges in our state to offer bachelor degrees in applied science, nursing, and applied technology. (Senate Bill 2118)
Currently three community colleges offer bachelor degrees and have since 2003. The legislation would open that up to other colleges.
Those behind the bill claim that it would help nurses in Texas receive bachelor’s degrees, which is an important professional credential for career advancement in that field.
Critics worry about community colleges then competing with our existing four-year colleges and universities.
